Témiscaming : l'histoire d'une ville

When the factory chimneys went quiet following the announcement of a plant closure by RYAM, the entire heart of Témiscaming was shaken. Our new exhibition aims to transform this shock into a moment of collective awareness.

Through large raw wooden structures, archival photographs, and life-size silhouettes, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the town’s history:

  • The Founding – Why a pulp and paper giant chose this Témiscamingue promontory in the first place.
  • Life in a Company Town – Uniform houses, social services, a strong sense of community.
  • Overcoming Crises – A major turning point: 1971. Here, photo and video excerpts from the film Témiscamingue, Québec by Martin Duckworth (National Film Board of Canada) immerse visitors in the raw emotion of the plant’s closure by CIP.
  • Building the Future – A participatory wall where everyone is invited to share their own vision of the future.

Housed in the station's former waiting room, the exhibition is a dialogue with the setting: a space of departures and new beginnings.

When you visit "Témiscaming: l'histoire d'une ville", you'll discover how a factory shaped an entire town, but above all how a community today draws on its past to bounce back and reinvent its future.
